From beer to tea, Ashleigh Sharman uncovers why we’re obsessed with downing liquid collagen.
Recent news that Suntory Holdings Limited has launched a collagen-infused beer may have caused a stir in consumer media, however we’ve long known the benefits of (and partaken in) the drinking of collagen – from tea to supplements, clients just can’t get enough.
But back to the collagen-infused beer, or Precious as it is known in its only point of sale- Hokkaido, Japan. Coming in at five percent alcohol and with two grams of collagen per can, the beer’s tagline announces that ‘Guys can tell if a girl is taking collagen or not.’
Golly, I hope not. Now, alcohol certainly isn’t on the list of skin super foods and two grams of collagen per can won’t turn back the clock but it’s a protein we’re definitely keen to ramp up in our bodies, whether ingesting or applied topically, thanks to its general decline as we age (estimated at one per cent each year after 20).
Giving strength and elasticity to our skin, salons, spas and clinics around the country then are working to boost collagen levels in clients from every angle.
‘Thalgo Collagen Booster Beauty Elixir formula is based on marine collagen, hyaluronic acid, vitamins C, E, B8 and selenium to provide a youthful glow in 10 days,’ explains Kim Thomasson, Education Manager BLC Cosmetics, of the one dose per day vial.
‘The elixir passes through the intestine walls, and is then taken by the micro-circulation of the blood to target tissues such as the skin, which then assimilates them and diffuses them towards the skin surface.’
In a course of 10 days, Thalgo’s Collagen Booster can be combined with skin treatments and home care – repeated two to four times each year depending on skin metabolic decreases.
But what of client wellbeing, pre and post-treatment? You BeauTEA founder Nicole Grass researched and trialled a multitude of herbal blends, before successfully identifying a combination of active ingredients that promoted healthier hair, skin and nails.
‘Thanks to the hydrating and regenerative properties of marine collagen, a peptide derived from fish scales, activated by safe and correct levels of vitamin C, clients can benefit from a range of anti-ageing advantages including an enhanced immune system and a noticeably clearer complexion,’ Nicole says of the preservative and caffeine-free tea that can be enjoyed hot or cold.
Similarly, The Beauty Chef Collagen Inner Beauty Boost delivers extra nutritional support for clients in need – the organic, bio-fermented probiotic concentratedesigned to increase the skin’s production of collagen and promote a radiant, naturally plumped complexion from the inside out.
‘Specifically formulated to address skin firmness, fine lines, free-radical damage and aid skin maintenance, Collagen Inner Beauty Boost contains a blend of Certified Organic maqui berry, acai, papaya, blueberry, goji-berry and pomegranate powders with grape-seed extract, zinc and vitamin C,’ Carla Oates says of her potent antioxidant-rich formula rich taken daily with water and containing more than six-billion naturally occurring prebiotics and probiotics per 15ml serve.
Collagen-infused beer isn’t sounding so crazy all of a sudden. So whether you recommend a series of collagen enhancing vials or prepare a collagen boosting beverage, it’s truly about providing 360 degree options for your client to maximise the best outcomes in skin health. And cheers to that!
