Arc Motif’s free cosmetic tattooing initiative for cancer patients.
In a heartfelt gesture to support those undergoing cancer treatment, Arc Motif—a unique Brisbane-based beauty salon and art gallery—has introduced ‘Brows for Good,’ a charitable initiative offering free cosmetic eyebrow tattoos to individuals battling cancer.
This program is designed to be more than a beauty service; it’s a safe, nurturing space for patients to regain confidence and find solace as they navigate the physical and emotional challenges of treatment.
Owner Kiara Doherty, the force behind Arc Motif, founded the program with a deeply personal mission. Cancer has cast a long shadow on Kiara’s family, igniting her passion to make a difference in the lives of others facing similar struggles. Kiara’s mother, Jane, was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, at a young age. Despite a courageous fight, Jane tragically passed away just 18 months later, leaving behind a profound impact on her family. Three years after Jane’s passing, Kiara’s aunt Liz received an ovarian cancer diagnosis, which led to genetic testing. It revealed a BRCA1 gene mutation, which carries a significantly increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
“The BRCA1 gene mutation profoundly impacts cancer risk. Understanding my family’s genetic history has motivated me to support those affected by cancer in any way I can, which inspired the ‘Brows for Good’ initiative,” Kiara shares.
In 2017, Kiara underwent genetic testing herself and tested positive for the BRCA1 mutation. She now undergoes proactive bi-annual breast MRIs and ultrasounds to closely monitor her health, although the lack of effective ovarian cancer screening options remains a concern. This personal experience has strengthened her resolve to support others on similar paths.
Kiara explains, “When going through treatment, the physical changes can deeply impact self-image and confidence. Eyebrows are often overlooked, but they make such a difference in how people see themselves. Even though it’s a small thing, they can transform a face and give someone a sense of normalcy and identity.”
With ‘Brows for Good,’ Kiara aims to help cancer patients feel more like themselves, even when everything else feels uncertain. The initiative provides complimentary cosmetic eyebrow tattooing to individuals who have lost their eyebrows due to chemotherapy, allowing them to regain a familiar part of their appearance.
Through the process, Kiara hopes to offer both emotional support and practical help, fostering a sense of empowerment for participants as they reclaim their beauty and self-confidence during one of life’s most difficult journeys.
