About this time of year, post-Easter break, you are likely seeing an increase in the number of clients wanting to be rid of their damned spots, notably of the pigmented variety.

The sun is rapidly mellowing into winter; the ideal time to tackle uneven skin discolourations. A common cause of these dark patches is exposure to UV radiation, which leads to the formation of new dark patches on the skin and the worsening of existing ones.

Pigmentation is perceived as the third most troubling skin problem to consumers after wrinkles and sagging – more than 90 percent of Caucasians over 50, for instance, are troubled by skin discolourations to some degree.

Pigmentation has many causes including genetic predisposition, post-inflammation (ie. sun damage, acne, hormonal changes such as caused by pregnancy, menopause and endocrine disorders), photo-sensitising medications and/or products and good ‘ol skin ageing.

Today, depigmenting treatments represent more than 20 percent of the total cosmetic skincare market.

Mesoestetic, a global leader in topical depigmentation, recently launched an international campaign to develop its Specialised Depigmentation Centre program.

The program is designed to qualify and certify a select number of advanced skincare clinics as specialised depigmentation centres, with 40 clinics across Australia (among 250 worldwide) recently participating in this global initiative.

“We are very proud to have had the opportunity to offer this initiative to our qualifying clients to become Mesoestetic Depigmentation Specialist Centres,” says Catherine Biedermann, managing director of Advanced Cosmeceuticals.

“Not only has this course provided them with a competitive advantage but they are also part of a global skincare community that mesoestetic is establishing”,

Mesoestetic international trainer Tina Note, was recently in Australia to run the intensive course in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Tina has many years’ experience as a product specialist and international trainer with mesoestetic Pharma Group, conducting training courses and workshops in more than 60 countries.

Comprehensive training was provided to the select group in the following treatment areas:

The depigmentation course provided a balance of theory and practical. A popular topic was the personalisation of treatments, which is achieved by combining different treatments to offer clients a tailored program that is effective for their skin concern and lifestyle.

“The training covered the importance of taking into consideration a client’s commitment to a treatment – for instance, the Cosmelan treatment requires a four-month commitment,” says Catherine Biedermann.

“If the client is unable to do that, a treatment should be recommended that would be more suitable.

“Ongoing training and support is an integral part of this scheme, with qualifying clinics committed to attending training schools and in-clinic training.

“The ability to correctly tailor a treatment package according to a patients’ needs requires far more in-depth knowledge than recommending standard products and treatments.

“In order to be able to do this effectively, and with confidence, the clinician must have comprehensive knowledge of the product range, composition of the products at hand, how to use them with machines, protocols of application and home care recommendations making continuous training an absolute must.”

Among participating clinics who have provided enthusiastic testimonials are Skin Renu, Balmain, NSW (Sylvia Down), Appearance Clinic Australia, Victoria (Dr Diana Phan), Elixir Skin Fitness (Rose Bonasera), and Victorian Dermal Group (Derya Koch).

Formulated for the Australian market, mesoestetic Cosmelan is a method of lightening blemishes caused by excess melanin. It works to inhibit the enzyme tyrosinase that is integral to the production of melanin (melanogenesis).

This paralyses melanin production for a long period of time during which corneum stratum flaking plus the action of the macrophagic cells taking the melanin deposits with them lightens the skin.

Tyrosinase inhibition does not make the melanocytes disappear, but simply paralyses or stops melanin production without risk of white blemishes appearing.

The Cosmelan treatment is a two-stage process: professional treatment in the salon or clinic and then a home-care treatment pack.

During the treatment process, it is important to protect the skin at all times using an ultra-high SPF sunscreen and re-apply it regularly throughout the day.

With significant research conducted into the treatments’ efficacy, Cosmelan has been shown to have an effectiveness rate of 95 percent in 99 percent of the cases of skin spots and hyperpigmentation.
