Now a huge part of our industry’s culture, vegan cosmetics and skincare aren’t simply a passing trend, but more of a lifestyle choice, as beauty consumers and suppliers alike continue to switch to more sustainable, ethical and environmentally-friendly choices.
In fact, according to a new report by Grand View Research, the global vegan cosmetics market size is expected to reach USD 20.8 billion by 2025.
It is important to keep in mind that, although closely linked, there is a difference between vegan and cruelty-free. Vegan means the formula contains no animal by-products or animal-derived ingredients. Cruelty-free means that they are registered to not conduct cosmetic testing on animals (look for the bunny logo).
Katie Blyth, Founder and Director of boutique eco-lux brand Lux Aestiva, says that being vegan is often just one piece of the puzzle for brands throughout the industry trying to do their bit for the planet.
“Using vegan and natural products is obviously a better choice for the welfare of animals, but it also has a positive impact on the environment,” says Katie. “Natural and vegan beauty typically use less chemicals which is obviously beneficial for both our personal health and the health of the planet!”
Katie says the rise of vegan beauty products is very clear to see, and is partly attributed to the increasing popularity and discovery of active plant ingredients. “There has certainly been a rise in the beauty industry of late that’s trending towards veganism and natural products, which is so wonderful to see,” she says. “Consumers are becoming more mindful of their choices, from the food we eat, right down to the products we use on our skin. Consumers are also educating themselves on ingredients, both the good and the bad, and trying to understand the alternatives and how they could benefit their life. There are so many wonderful natural alternative ingredients out there that on their own can be potent and combined can be absolutely powerful. A great example of this is Prickly Pear Oil which comes from cactus and is fast absorbing, offering radiance, hydration, tightening of pores and a host of other skin benefits. Or Hibiscus Flower which is high in antioxidants and AHAs, helping to improve skin’s texture and diminish the signs of ageing.”
It can often be difficult and frustrating to navigate through the endless ocean of ‘ethical’ brands and products – some brands are completely vegan and others only offer a selection of vegan products.
