The Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery Has A New Name

The Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery (ACCS) has announced its new name – the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery and Medicine (ACCSM).

The name change is effective from today, 1 July 2021 and was voted for unanimously by members at its recent Annual General Meeting.

ACCSM President, Dr Patrick Tansley, said the updated name is the most significant change since the College’s inception almost 30 years ago.

“Cosmetic surgery and medicine are a relatively new and expanding area of specialised practice with growing popularity. The update to the name of our College is reflective both of this emerging medical field and growing consumer demand,” Dr Tansley said.

“Whilst the College’s training programs will remain unchanged, the new name better reflects both the medical and surgical faculties of the College and represents the totality of cosmetic medical practice,” Dr Tansley said.

“The Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery and Medicine will continue to provide the most comprehensive education and training of medical doctors in Australia leading to a Fellowship, specifically in cosmetic medicine and surgery. It is the only single professional organisation in Australia to do so. The College will also continue to recertify practitioners specifically in cosmetic medical practice.

“Our primary goal will always be to ensure the safe provision of cosmetic procedures to patients through the supply of appropriately trained and certified healthcare practitioners. As such, we will continue to be the leading voice in cosmetic medical practice.”

ACCSM continues to advocate for the safe provision of cosmetic surgery and medicine, reflecting the reality that cosmetic medicine and surgery fall outside the specialist training programs accredited by the Australian Medical Council and provided by traditional medical and surgical colleges in public hospitals.

The ACCSM has proposed to the government to provide a single accreditation process so that Australian patients can be assured their surgeon is properly trained in cosmetic surgery.
