Admin The Highest Cause Of Surgeon Burnout

Medscape, a leading online global destination for physicians and healthcare professionals worldwide, has just released their Plastic Surgeon Lifestyle, Happiness & Burnout Report 2020. The survey was completed by 15,181 physicians practicing in the United States throughout the period of June-September last year, and covers various facets of health, wellness and lifestyle, both in and out of the office, including alcohol consumption, depression, workload, exercise, dealing with burnout, even car manufacturer of choice!

Here are some snapshots from the results:

  • Just 38% of participating Plastic Surgeons said they were very or extremely happy at work. Plenty of other various healthcare professionals also participated in the survey, and Plastic Surgeons are up there towards the top of the happiness scale, with Dermatologists taking out first prize.

  • How about outside of work? The results are in:

  • Many healthcare professionals experience burnout, with 25% burnt out and 4% experiencing depression. Administrative tasks seem to be the highest contributor to burnout. Here are a few more contributing factors:

  • 40% of surgeons deal with this burnout by sleeping it off. Not too far behind is isolation, exercise, alcohol consumption and music among other things.

  • Are participants getting enough time to focus on their health and wellness goals? Just 11% said always, 27% most of the time, 36% sometimes, 22% rarely and 3% never.
  • What about exercise? 22% of participating Plastic Surgeons said they exercise once or less per week, 42% 2-3 times per week, 21% said 4-5 times per week, and 6% had time to exercise every day. 8% said they don’t exercise at all.
  • What are the figures like around drinks per week? It’s a relatively even mix, with most having fewer than 1 drink per week.
