ASPS Reveals Top Cosmetic Treatments Of 2019

The numbers are in for the top treatments of 2019.

Breast augmentation has been listed as the top procedure of 2019, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The annual survey recorded the responses of 350 member surgeons to uncover the most popular surgical and non-surgical treatments.

Breast augmentation has maintained the position of the most popular treatment since 2006, ASPS reports. Liposuction was listed as the second most popular procedure followed by eyelid surgery, which has overtaken nose reshaping from the previous year.

Nose reshaping, face lifts, tummy tucks, breast lifts, and breast reductions were among the other top performing procedures. Dermabrasion was the only listed non-surgical procedure.

TOP SURGICAL AND NON-SURGICAL TREATMENTS OF 2019

  1. Breast augmentation (299,715 procedures)
  2. Liposuction (265,209 procedures)
  3. Eyelid surgery (211,005 procedures)
  4. Nose reshaping (207,284 procedures)
  5. Facelift (123,685 procedures)
  6. Tummy tuck (123,427 procedures)
  7. Breast lift (113,188 procedures)
  8. Dermabrasion (77,366 procedures)

  10. Breast reduction (46,340 procedures)

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures have experienced exponential growth with numbers increasing for the third year in a row.

16.3 million minimally invasive procedures were performed in 2019, and this number is up 2 per cent from the previous year. Botulinum toxin type A was listed as the top procedure. The list remains unchanged from 2018 with the exception of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment, which has replaced microdermabrasion.

TOP MINIMALLY INVASIVE COSMETIC PROCEDURES OF 2019

  1. Botulinum toxin type A (7.69 million procedures)
  2. Soft tissue fillers (2.72 million procedures)
  3. Chemical peel (1.38 million procedures)
  4. Laser hair removal (1.0 million procedures
  5. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment (685,755 procedures)

The survey also uncovered how COVID-19 changed how surgeons operate their practices. Roughly two thirds (68 per cent) of respondents are conducting consultations virtually due to COVID-19.

While the ASPS anticipates a decrease in the total number of procedures conducted in 2020, member-surgeons have noted a continued interest in treatments throughout the pandemic. This finding suggests patient confidence in the industry’s ability to safely reopen and aligns with the ASPS consumer findings from May, which revealed an overall positive attitude towards plastic surgery even among those who are interested but have not undergone procedures.

The number of cosmetic surgical procedures has remained steady in comparison to 2018 figures, where 1.8 million procedures were performed. It’s forecasted that demand will continue once practices return to normal post-pandemic.
