It’s very puzzling to generations of Australian women whose mantra was (and who were tortured by) “does my bum look big in this?”.
Butt, if you’ll pardon the pun, thousands of Australian women are rushing to go under the knife in ambitious quests to emulate the trending “plump rumps” of their celebrity icons, according to Nine News.
The rounded derrieres famously sported by Australian rapper Iggy Azalea and Kim Kardashian are believed to have inspired a generation of impressionable women.
More women than ever are looking to achieve the curvaceous bottoms, signalled by a giant surge in demand for Brazilian “butt lift” surgery around the country.
Experts say procedures to transform women’s bottoms have taken preference over breast augmentation surgery, with the number of butt lifting rising by 26 percent last year.
Experts say women are currently asking for procedures transferring their own fat, which was in line with current Hollywood trends
Former Big Brother contestant Skye Wheatley frequently flaunts a notably rounder rump since her reality show stint in 2014 to her Instagram.
While she has never held back on divulging details of her boob jobs, lip fillers and rhinoplasty, the star has kept quiet on whether she’s had any professional work on her derriere.
Fellow reality personality Noni Janur, who appeared on The Bachelor in 2016, is well-known for parading her voluptuous curves in tiny bikinis.
Meanwhile Keira Maguire, who also found notoriety on The Bachelor, proudly boasts about her butt lifting procedures, among her multiple other surgeries, to social media.
She even filmed part of her treatment as it was happening to her followers on Snapchat.
Fellow Bachelor contestant Zilda Williams also exerts a rather rotund buttocks, but maintains her booty has been all work and no surgical short cuts.
Most commonly, fat was liposuctioned from fatty areas like the waist, stomach and thighs, before being injected into the butt cheek.
THE BIG BUTT POSTER GIRL
Earlier this year, wearing a thong that disguised little but her vagina, Kim Kardashian did her best to break the Internet, flaunting her booty bountiful for the camera on a girls’ getaway in Mexico.
Although she has since moaned “I don’t look like that” the unretouched photos caused a worldwide “love it!/loathe it!” sensation that focused on the sheer dimensions of Kimye’s two self-proclaimed best assets and the divots and dimples thereon.
Too real for some, it seemed, as Kim’s Instagram feed was littered with fat-shaming comments and other insults, angering the reality star, who lost 100k Insta followers within days.
The quest for a beautiful butt – whether bigger or smaller, but most definitely firmer and smoother – is one of the fast-growing (if you’ll pardon the poor pun) areas of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic enhancement.
SPA+CLINIC takes a look at some options.
BUTTOCK LIFT AND/OR IMPLANT SURGERY
Procedures to augment and/or otherwise beautify the buttocks are the fastest growing sector of cosmetic surgery, according to Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Darryl Hodgkinson.
“Buttock surgery has always been popular in South America where surgery to lift the bottom or augment the gluteal muscles is nothing new,” says Dr Hodgkinson.
“I have been performing buttock augmentation with gluteal implants and buttock lifting since the late 1980s and early 1990s when I was in practice in the US and had a large Central and South American patient base.
“And while gluteal implants are nothing new, neither is the idea of voluptuous backside as an iconic body part.
“Jennifer Lopez is perhaps best known as the original poster girl of the derrière who as an already acclaimed actress had her debut Latin pop album go platinum in 1999.
“This was followed in 2001 by Beyoncé, then with Destiny’s Child who wrote, produced and performed the song Bootylicious, presaging an anatomical feature which she herself would become synonymous with: the `booty’.
“In Latin countries, however, the attraction to the body and booty beautiful had never waned.
“What then made then 2015 the Year of the Rear, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery?
“The society’s statistics noted that buttock implants were the fastest growing cosmetic surgical procedure in that year ,up 36 percent over the previous year, with buttock lifts also up 36% and buttock augmentation with fat grafting (such as the Brazilian butt lift) up 28%.
“Perhaps there was some influence from the media lead up to the Rio Olympics. Perhaps it has been the increase in the number of celebrities across a wider ethnic spread who are embracing their best assets: the Kardashians, Iggy Azalea and Amber Rose are just a few examples.
“Regardless of the cause of the surge, it has been noted even here at my practice in Double Bay. The number of patients seeking buttock augmentation and buttock lifting has soared.
“The most common procedure performed is buttock augmentation with implants. Both gel and solid silicone implants are available but the most commonly used implant is the solid silicone one.
“The idea of the implant is to give projection to the buttocks and mimic well-formed gluteal muscles like those of a Latin dancer.
“The idea is not to mimic the fatty deposits of a large backside but a well formed, firm backside.
“These implants can be bought in various shapes and sizes or can be customised depending upon the patient’s desired result and their physiognomy.”
Dr Hodgkinson says buttock implants are not only for women: men also commonly seek buttock implants.
“A flat bottom is not seen as masculine or muscular and this can send men to the gym for hours and hours. For those unable to develop the shape and physique they are seeking, buttock implants can be an alternative.
“The surgery is performed in our fully licensed and accredited day surgery centre on a day basis. The procedure itself is done under a light general anaesthesia and involves inserting the implant underneath the gluteus maximus muscle.
“The reason that implants are used more commonly than fat injection is because fat resorption is unpredictable even in expert hands as it has to do with the ageing and health of each individual’s body.
“This means that the shape and longevity are less predictable and the procedure often needs to be repeated over time as the fat absorbs as it does in all areas of the body as we age; and let’s face it , who wants a `fatty bum’?”
NON-SURGICAL BUTT CONTOURING AND/OR FAT REDUCTION
Many of the following devices can be used on multiple areas of the face and body to reduce fat, lift and firm skin and to reduce stretch marks, scars (dependent on applicators are used) and generally enhance skin texture and face/body contours.
Not all are suitable for salon or spa use (they may need to be operated under the auspices of a medical professional), but a reputable device supplier will guide you on the best choice for your business and client needs. A selection of device technology to consider, in no particular order:
COOLTECH
The CoolTech system harnesses cryolipolyis (fat freezing) technology with six different applicators correlating with specific body areas, such as the attacks.
It is an effective way to remove pockets of fat without the pain or risks involved in traditional methods such as liposuction; there are no needles, no incisions, no downtime, and no pressure garments to wear afterwards.
Treatments are safe, quick and easy treatment and allow the client to resume their normal routine immediately after the treatment.
After one treatment clients can expect to see 20-30% fat reduction in the treated area.
Results can begin to be seen in as little as 15 days after the first treatment will more dramatic results will be visible after 8 weeks.
The maximum number of sessions required is 3 sessions per one area for remarkable results.
ULTRAFORMER III
Ultrasonic face lifting has soared in popularity over the past few years, with results (in appropriate candidates) rivalling those of surgery but without the trauma and downtime of same.
Now those results are achievable for the body, using multi-functional cartridges, specially designed for treatment of the body with Ultraformer III.
Harnessing MMFU (Micro and Macro Focused Ultrasound) technology, it is a solution for anyone who suffers from skin laxity and/or stubborn fat pockets on the neck, abdomen, buttocks, knees, upper arms, knees and inner thighs, lower leg, ankle and back.
During the Ultraformer III body treatment, fat cells are damaged and then transported through the vascular and lymphatic drainage systems and disposed of naturally by the body.
Lifting and tightening of the skin and reduction of fat will be noticed over a period of 2-3 months and further improvements can appear for up to6 months after a single procedure.

LPG ENDERMOLOGIE
Cellulite resists diet, exercise and liposuction. During an LPG Endermologie session, a therapist operates the machine via a hand-held treatment head that gently lifts and rolls the connective tissue, to target cellultie’s its signature uneven dimpling.
It frees up blocked circulation and breaks down stubborn fatty deposits. Fibrosis around fat cells is softened, metabolism is stimulated, toxins are flushed and lymphatic system drained. Collagen and elastin production are boosted.
TRUSCULPT
TruSculpt is a radio frequency (RF) technology that delivers deep heating to kill targeted fat cells.
Typically, a patient receives two to three treatments, four to eight weeks apart.
The handpiece is applied to skin to deliver a pulse of RF energy, each lasting on average four minutes.
Therapists can adjust the temperature depending on client comfort levels. Typically no pain medication, topical anesthetics, gels or active cooling is needed.
The body’s natural system breaks down fat cells in treated areas during a period from four weeks to three months, during which results will gradually be seen.
BODYFX
RF precisely heats skin for fat and cellulite reduction and body shaping, simultaneously restoring elasticity to the abdomen, buttocks, hips and thighs.
Sydney cosmetic surgeon Dr Joseph Ajaka says RF devices like BodyFX “allow you to tighten skin while removing fat without compromising the other.
“We have found it to be more effective than laser liposuction when it comes to skin tightening results. I have found no other machine that effectively tightens skin like that is non-excisional.”

MED CONTOUR
Med Contour uses a powerful computerised system that harnesses ultrasound waves to reduce fat as well as cellulite.
The device emits a powerful double beam of low frequency modulated ultrasound waves.
Its cavitational effect breaks the fat cells, starting a metabolic process that leads to the body’s natural elimination of the fat waste.
The device includes a separate handpiece for performing an immediate lymphatic drainage of the treated area in order to accelerate the removal of residue.
SILHOUETTE TONE
The Silhouette Tone Lumicell Wave 6 system combines four non-invasive technologies:
- Infrared pneumatic massage to improve circulation, loosening fibrous bands of connective tissue around fat deposits, enhancing lymphatic drainage, reducing fibrous adhesion and dimpling.
- Ultrasound heats the deeper layers where cellulite forms, triggering the release of stored fat.
- RF provides uniform heat to the dermis, stimulating new collagen production to tighten and firm skin.
- Needle-free mesotherapy facilitates transdermal delivery of products rich in fat-burning ingredients.

SLEEKSKIN
Shockwaves were originally used to break up calcific deposits, such as kidney stones.
For the past 10 years they have been harnessed for a range of musculoskeletal conditions, providing great results in pain management of calcifications and soft tissues.
Their cosmetic potential was realised when female athletes being treated for muscle injuries noted dramatic improvements in their cellulite.
Enter SleekSKIN, also known as Shockwave or Acoustic Wave Cellulite treatment, for dramatic reduction in fat and cellulite deposits, as well as something and firming skin texture.
ALMA BEAUTY REFORM
A highly effective longterm solution for the contouring and tightening of body and face, Alma Beauty Reform‘s patented UniPolar technology uses heating achieved with a radio frequency of 40.68 MHz, sending 40.68 million transmissions per second to the tissue.
This type of focused and powerful energy enables deep dermal heating causing little or no discomfort.
Used successfully in over 4,600 clinics worldwide, Reform treatments are suitable for all skin types (Fitzpatrick I-VI), as well as for thin and delicate areas.
COOLSCULPT
Freeze that fat to death, baby. With CoolSculpt, a world leader in permanent fat reduction technology, that is exactly what happens through a process called cryolypolysis.
Centimetres and bulges resistant to exercise and diet can be iced away.
First stop: those annoying bulges that take up residence on your back upper thighs, right under the butt. With one or two CoolSculpt sessions these can be history.
