We can finally bring you some positive news on the Victorian lockdown situation. Premier Daniel Andrews announced changes to the Roadmap to Recovery on Saturday following criticism from several industries who labelled the plan as ‘unfair’.
Restrictions are to ease for the beauty industry earlier than proposed in the initial roadmap issued last week. Personal beauty services will be allowed to resume in line with hairdressers in step three, the premier detailed in a press conference over the weekend.
“I can announce that beauty and personal services where a mask can be worn for the entire time the person who is getting the services they are accessing, will be able to proceed alongside hairdressing in the third step,” Andrews said.
This means metropolitan Melbourne beauty businesses can reopen on the 26th October providing the average number of cases in the previous fortnight is less than five. This is almost a month earlier than the original reopen date of the 23rd November, which was also subject to case number conditions. Regional beauty could be back in business as early as next week, as they currently have an average of 3.9 new cases for the past 14 days.
However, there are some services exempt from the new changes. These include services that cannot be performed with a mask.
“This means that services such as facials, face tattoos, face piercings, they cannot occur because a mask would not be able to be worn while those services were being administered,” Andrews said.
Maddison Sontemo, owner of The Aesthetic Skin Clinic in Geelong, told SPA+CLINIC that the changes are a great step forward, but it’s not viable for many businesses to open this way. We spoke to her following the release of the Roadmap To Recovery as she lobbied, along with several other beauty business owners, to revise the harsh restrictions for the beauty industry.
“It’s a great step forward for the industry, and our voices are definitely being heard! We need to work a little harder to be able to open up facial skin treatments as this is 90 per cent of our business. We are hoping every few days more information is released,” Sontemo said.
