Runway To Realway In Three Steps

It’s been a week since Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia wrapped up, but we’re still thinking about the hot beauty looks on show.

Trends we spotted weren’t limited to the catwalk. From street style hustle, to backstage bustle, this year it was all about natural, ‘undone’ makeup, shiny skin and a new-guard of nail art. We share tutorials from the experts who created the aesthetics.

The Trend: “Undone” Lips

Makeup artist and marketing manager for Inglot, Courtney Sinclair, conceived an understated concept for the models at Mariam Seddiq, starting with just kissed, natural-look lips.

Prep: Smooth on a non-tacky hydrating lip balm.
Preen: Selecting a pinkish-brown shade (the hue of your natural lips after biting them) stroke a soft pencil inside the lip line, then using your finger, smudge the colour over the mouth.
Perfect: Using a lip brush, apply a hint of matte lipstick in the centre of the mouth and use your finger to blur it outwards to the lip line.

The Trend: “Abstract” Manicure

We bumped into style icon, celebrity nail artist and writer, Maria Vlezko who told us a quick tutorial for creating the fabulous abstract nail art she was sporting.

Prep: Over base coat, brush on 2 coats of a cream coloured nail lacquer. Wait until completely dry.
Preen: Opening a duck-egg blue nail polish, stroke the brush multiple times on the rim of the bottle to dry it then with a with a quick flick of the wrist drag one stroke of colour on each nail. Repeat the same quick brushstroke motion on a different part of each nail using a deep fuchsia hue.
Perfect: While the abstract colour brushstrokes are still tacky, take a pair of tweezers and gently place nail foil and studs on the nail, pressing them down with a silicone sculpting tool. Then, when nails are completely dry, seal with topcoat.

Skincare is paramount to this aesthetic so we speak with senior training specialist at Dermalogica Jodi Ayre, as well as Inglot’s Courtney Sinclair to find out how to get the look.

(l-r) Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist, Dermalogica Phyto-Replenish Oil, Inglot AMC Illuminator, Inglot Sparkling Dust

Prep: On clean skin, spray a hydrating mist over face, neck and décolletage. Then on damp skin, warm a little face oil into palms before pressing them onto the forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and neck.
Preen: Use fingers to dab illuminating lotion onto the brow-bone, cheek bones, tip of nose and cupids bow.
Perfect: Wait a few moments to let the illuminator set, before taking a large fluffy brush and setting it with a fine, powdery shimmer.
