There are very few conferences as anticipated as Dr Steven Liew’s Aesthetics, and the 2023 instalment was no exception. The theme ‘From Walking To Flying’ aimed to take cosmetic injectors’ practices to the next level, to disrupt the current way of doing things and to explore innovative ideas on how to improve safety and efficacy for both industry professionals and patients.
Hundreds of cosmetic practitioners came together at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse, where the brand new Winx Stand offered a new venue with a light-filled exhibition space and an auditorium big enough to fit the huge crowd of eager ‘students’ ready to improve their injecting techniques. It wouldn’t be Aesthetics without a lot of loud music and flashy animations to kick off each session, and the always incredible Dr Stefania Roberts introduced the first morning sessions dedicated to the mid-face and different ethnicities’ unique anatomies.
The morning also included a cadaver dissection lesson, which followed a minute of silence for the generous people who donated their bodies to science. We were impressed by the huge 4K screens, which showed every detail of injection close-ups effortlessly, making it possible for hundreds of people to get a good look at injecting techniques.
The rest of the day included sessions on the lower face, melasma treatment, 3D photography, and a very interesting panel discussions on the ‘new injectables on the block’ where the latest Australian launches of filler and biostimulator products were presented. A ‘secret segment’ following afternoon tea was a real surprise as Dr Stefania Roberts, Dr Philip Bekhor, and Dr Van Park impressed with choreographed dance performances on stage, making us wonder what these multi-talented people cannot do! Edutainment at its best. The first full day of the conference concluded with networking drinks in the exhibitor area.
The second day of Aesthetics 2023 included one of the highlights of the conference: a look at injectable treatment results from the year prior that didn’t quite achieve a satisfying result. Panels discussed why a treatment didn’t work out, what could have been done better, and possible solutions. It’s this self-critical look at injecting and the knowledge that you should never stop learning that makes Aesthetics a conference that is quite unique and refreshing.
‘Strike A Pose’ was the theme of the event’s Gala Dinner on Saturday night, which transformed the auditorium into a dance floor. There were dancers, free flowing champagne, and oh-so many photo opportunities for guests who donned their most glamorous outfits and celebrated a successful conference.
The third and final day of Aesthetics 2023 was dedicated to complication management, biostimulators, and a look into the future. Dr Steven Liew kept reminding the audience that they need to ask themselves, not only ‘how’ to inject, but ‘why’, in other words, avoiding injections that are unnecessary or may not actually yield the result that is desired. It was a conference full of education and entertainment and we highly enjoyed being a part of it.
Aesthetics 2024 will take place on August 1-4, 2024.
