Mala McAlpin There’s an exciting new treatment for incontinence that’s rapidly expanding across clinics throughout Australia, and it isn’t difficult to see why. The treatment, and the device itself, is incredibly simple, discreet, and unexpectedly easy – no embarrassment necessary!
According to the Continence Foundation of Australia, up to 37% of females and 11% of males have urinary incontinence/ bladder leakage, or an estimated 4.2 million Australians aged 15 years and over. This figure is even set to rise to 5.6 million Australians by 2030.
Emsella, by BTL Aesthetics, is a completely non-invasive treatment for incontinence and LBL – and all it requires is for patients to sit down. Emsella looks just like a modernistic armchair, and patients simply take a seat – fully clothed – while the device works its magic. Utilising focused electromagnetic energy, one Emsella session brings about thousands of supramaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions, which over time results in regained control over pelvic floor muscles and bladder.
Typically, the treatment takes around 30 minutes, and 6 total sessions spanned across two weeks are recommended for best results. Patients can resume regular activity or head back to work immediately afterwards, and in some cases, results can be noticed after just one session, with these improving over the following weeks.

Dr Julene also recommends the device for combined therapies for some patients. “The Emsella would work very well in conjunction with a radiofrequency device, that you’re using for vaginal rejuvenation, or a fractional CO2 laser for the same purpose, so whether you do a combination treatment while they’re receiving the laser treatments or the RF treatments, you could even do the Emsella the same day.”
