Are We On The Cusp of ‘Curing’ Ageing?

FOREVER-YOUNG

Award-winning American molecular biologist and research scientist Dr Bill Andrews’ business card says it all: ‘Cure Aging or Die Trying’.

That has been his ‘obsessive quest’ since age 10, when Dr Andrews’ father said he would love to see his boy grow up to be a doctor and cure the ‘disease’ of getting old.

The son of the father is living proof that the 20 years and US $33 million his biotech company Sierra Sciences has spent unlocking the molecular mechanisms of ageing has been all worthwhile.

Dr Andrews visited Australia last week to share his findings, hopes and dreams, and to officially launch a revolutionary new skincare product  – 1Truth818 Serum – which utilises his award-winning discovery; the telomerase-activating molecule TAM-818. We’ll get to this in a moment ‘ back to Dr Andrews.

At 61 he looks around 20 years younger and is one of the fittest ultra-marathon runners in the US.

‘I can run 100 miles, finish, turn around and meet friends on the course who are still coming in,’ he says. ‘I’ve been in many races where I’m stepping over bodies of people who have collapsed, and I’m feeling great.’

On his mission is to extend the human life span to, conservatively, 125 (ideally 150) years or die trying, Dr Andrews nearly did. His return to running after a break in his 40s was inspired by a warning from his own doctor that he was headed for an early grave.

He had been working obsessively 14-18 hours a day in the laboratory for five years on the ‘cure’ for ageing. His doctor’s grim prognosis brought him up short: ‘I thought, god, I don’t want to cure ageing and then drop dead!’.

But let’s digress (again) for a moment. This story is essentially about telomeres, regions at the tips of our chromosomes, and how they influence the way our bodies age – including the appearance of the skin.

With ageing, telomeres shorten every time a cell divides until they are rendered useless and are unable to support the DNA. This shortening has been shown to have direct correlation with ageing and age-related diseases.

Scientists have known about telomeres since the 1930s, and that they get shorter as we get older since the 1970s.

But it wasn’t until the discovery in the 1990s by Dr Andrews and his team that anyone knew how this shortening might be prevented – indeed, the telomeres potentially re-lengthened; hence generate a reversal of ageing processes in the body.

The discovery was of telomerase, an enzyme that, when switched on in the body, will not only stop telomere shortening, but re-lengthen them.

For the discovery, Dr Andrews was awarded second place as United States Inventor of the Year in 1997. He is also a named inventor on 45 US-issued patents on telomerase and author of numerous scientific research studies published in peer reviewed scientific journals.

At Sierra Sciences in Reno, Nevada, close to 300,000 synthetic compounds were analysed in the search for the strongest telomerase inducers.

Telomerase-activating molecule TAM-818 was found to be the most effective and it is this molecule – derived from plant sources* – that has been harnessed in 1Truth818 Serum.

It hit the Australian market last October, distributed by InSkin Cosmedics, which hosted Dr Andrews’ visit.

‘To many, ageing is just something that happens, an unavoidable part of life that brings many `un-niceties’,’ he told a captivated audience  of media and skin and health professionals last week as Sydney’s QT hotel.

‘But there is growing proof that perhaps ageing doesn’t have to be so unpleasant. Perhaps, it doesn’t even have to happen at all.

‘By putting a halt to telomere shortening – even better, re-lengthening them – it could be the answer to curing a long list of age-related diseases including Alzheimer’s, arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and macular degeneration.

‘The world is experiencing a `silver tsunami’. For instance, by 2050, 23 percent of the Australian population will be over 65. In Japan it will be 38 percent. Yet as things stand people are becoming increasingly unhealthy as they age.

‘I want people to still be dancing, playing tennis, partying and having the time of their life for their whole lifespan.’

Last year New Zealand’s Chase Life Extension Foundation approached Dr Andrews with view to using TAM-818 in skincare to dramatically reverse signs of ageing in and on the skin.

CASE-STUDY-1

Merryn, 40, from the New Zealand trial, used 1Truth818 for eight weeks and says lines on her forehead, crows feet and overall skin sensitivity has reduced significantly: ‘It’s is a great product’.

‘Over the years I have been approached by many quacks and charlatans wanting to do all sorts of things with my research – and in the anti-ageing industry you can be discredited very easily,’ he says. ‘But what I discovered was a company that had strong values and ethics.

‘Their mission was to create life-changing products that helped their customers and could be backed up with concrete evidence.

‘After formulating the 1Truth818 serum they then spent hundreds of thousands of dollars getting it independently tested at the world-renowned Abich Laboratories in Italy – and even I was amazed by just how good the results were!’

CASE-STUDY-3

Wendy used 1Truth818 for eight weeks. Three weeks into treatment she said she looked more radiant and that her wrinkles were almost gone.

At Abich Labs, clinical tests were conducted earlier this year on a sample of 100 people aged 36 to 65 over several months. Among the findings:

  • After 15 days of product twice-daily application, skin firmness improved an average 12.49 percent, while skin elasticity resulted improved 4.83 percent.
  • After 30 days of product twice-daily application, skin firmness increased to 20.3 percent, while skin elasticity rose 8.33 percent.

Abich Labs also tested 1Truth serum for toxicity and adverse reactions. It found 1Truth818 produced zero adverse reactions.

That clinical testing was backed up by a series of tests on volunteers in New Zealand over a period of two months. Just like the Abich tests, these trials produced remarkable results.

1Truth818 had a ‘soft’ launch in Australia on October 20 last year, when Inskin Cosmedics founder Marie Enna-Cocciolone organised a webinar with Dr Andrews for aesthetics practices interested in learning about the serum and his search for a cure for ageing.

‘The webinar was stunning success. Before it was over, more than 100 salons across Australia began flooding Inskin Cosmedics’ Sydney with orders for 1Truth818,’ Marie-Enna says.

CASE-STUDY-4

Liliana, 40, says her skin feels smother, the texture is softer, her pores look and feel smaller and says the serum has reduced dark hormonal pigmentation.

‘More orders came in from New Zealand, Europe and North America. Many pre-sold their entire allocation to clients two weeks before supplies arrived from New Zealand!’
